“The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” is an early gem by Mamoru Hosoda, known for his stunning visuals and heartfelt storytelling. The film follows Makoto, a typical teenage girl who discovers she can leap back in time after narrowly escaping a train accident. Initially using her newfound ability to fix small problems, she soon realizes that changing the past can lead to serious consequences, forcing her to face an unchangeable future.
Hosoda’s six feature films have all been nominated for, and five have been awarded, the Japan Academy Prize for “Animation of the Year.” Hosoda remains the only Japanese animation director outside of the famed Studio Ghibli to receive an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature.
