This month’s Klassic Kidz selection is a truly special film that didn’t receive the accolades it deserved when it was released, but has since become an animation fan favourite.
Nine-year-old Hogarth Hughes always dreamed of having a pet, but not one made out of metal and as tall as a building. After discovering a giant robot who crash-lands from space one night in 1957, Hogarth does everything in his power to keep his new metal-eating friend safe and hidden away from a federal agent who insists the giant was sent by the Russians.
Featuring a mix of hand drawn and computer animation, this beautiful story — adapted from the book by Ted Hughes — taps into the 1950s Space-Race frenzy while remaining at its core a story about friendship and acceptance.
It was also directorial debut of Brad Bird who went on to make other animated classic like “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille.”
